Welcome to Saint Bernard Rescue.

Please understand that this is a sort of portal to places about Saint Bernards, where you can find more direct and appropriate information about adopting one. :)

This page is here to help you learn about Laura Wasson and Averill Ring's Saint Bernard Rescue operations in the DC/MD/VA area. Since Saints are such large dogs, many get turned loose after they grow up from being newborn puppies. Sadly, this results in the death of many of these dogs. The rescue operations are organized by volunteers who help take these kind and gentle giants into a place where they are put up for adoption; hopefully to be given to people who may better care for them.

Adopting a Saint Bernard requires a lot of patience and care. Many of them have been abused and neglected. Many of them need special care at the vet, a lot of extra love, and confidence-building. Saint Bernards should not be adopted on a whim. Careful research should be done to see if you can care for, feed, and spend time with the dog. Adoptors will only be considered after careful scrutiny to see if they really do qualify for having a Saint Bernard. These dogs are not toys for little children to be discarded when one grows bored of them - as is the case all too often.

Although Saints need special care and attention, they do not need much more than most other large or giant breeds. Part of this site is here to help you dispell some of the myths created around Saints by movies such as Beethoven. For example: Although extremely large, Saints do not eat you out of house and home. They require just about as much food as any large breed and feeding them even the best of foods is relatively inexpensive.

Although it may seem, at first, that you must give a lot of care, a Saint Bernard is a best friend. Saints love people. They love attention and being with their owners. In fact, they need it. Saints make wonderful friends for children and adults alike. They are kind, loving, and affectionate even more than most other dogs. Part of the adoption form is created to find out if you can actually spend the time needed with your new Saint.

Finally, Saint Bernard Rescue is here to ensure that these beautiful and loving dogs who have served people for hundreds of years as rescuers themselves, are not forgotten. Theirs is a very long and heroic history. If you still think a Saint Bernard is for you, please read the information about the care of a Saint. If, after that, you still think that a Saint would find a loving home with you, then go on to the adoption papers. :)
